Choosing an Auto Repair Shop

Licensed technicians, written estimates and Ontario safety standard certificates — how to pick a mechanic you can stay with.

Look for licensed technicians

Automotive service technician (310S) is a compulsory trade in Ontario. Shops that display technician certifications and explain repairs without pressure tend to be the ones people stay with for years.

Estimates and your rights

Under Ontario consumer protection rules, if you ask for an estimate the shop cannot charge more than ten percent above it without your consent. Get the estimate in writing and ask for old parts back when a repair is significant.

Rust, winter and Elgin County roads

Road salt is hard on brake and fuel lines here. An annual undercarriage inspection, and rustproofing on a newer vehicle, tends to pay for itself well before a safety inspection fails.

Most St. Thomas homeowners get the best results by shortlisting two or three local businesses, comparing written quotes, and confirming licensing and insurance before any work starts.
